Clinical trials are done to ensure that the safety and effectiveness of a new medication or treatment before they are offered to the consumers. The new medication must undergo various research studies in a limited number of willing participants.
Research studies are being funded by sponsored companies such as medical institutions, pharmaceutical companies, medical practitioners, voluntary groups, and certain foundations who are concerned and on the lookout for new solutions to different kinds of medical conditions. Government agencies also sponsors research studies like the Department of Defense, Department of Veterans Affairs and the National Institute of Health wherein the research studies are conducted in different kinds of environment like the universities, hospitals, community health centers and doctors' offices.
The cost of the clinical trials come with the research studies for it cannot function properly, you have to cover the cost of care of the participants which are divided into two categories, the research cost and the routine care cost. The routine care cost involves treating the person's illness like in a cancer treatment. The patients don't have to be involved in the trial while the research cost is the cost in covered during the research study such as the costs in the various procedures during the trial, extra visits by the doctors and the extra tests conducted on the participants. This is mostly covered by the sponsored organization.
Before participating in any clinical trial, a participant must have a thorough knowledge of the cost of the trial and how it will be cover them. There are many instances that most insurance companies covers the routine care during the trial, some have agreements between the state and the insurance company. However there are insurance companies that do not cover the routine care involve in research studies especially if it concerns with the experimental tests. There are some states that have certain provisions before they participate in the cost of research studies especially if it concerns the prevention and the screening trials.
A person who has an inclination in being a participant in a research study should discuss this with the representative of his health insurance provider or let a representative from the research study talk to the health provider. The laws of the state and the voluntary agreement plus the health plans have their own criteria in covering the cost of the volunteer participating in the research study.
