Exercise is a very important part of life, without tension and resistance no one could become any stronger. It is a basic characteristic of nature to provide resistance.
Simply walking will aggravate muscles and cause caloric burn and muscle growth, if done for the proper amount of time. The more straining the exercise the more effective it will be, so long as you are also getting proper rest and nutrition along with the workouts.
You have got to have all three keys to get true physical gain. The first is exercise: the catalyst that causes the muscles to grow and develop.
The second is nutrition: the fuel to feed the catalyst, without nutrition exercise would only damage the body. Lastly rest: this is the time when our bodies take a break and start repairing themselves.
Those are the three keys to exercise, but that doesn't mean that exercise can't be done anywhere. The amount of exercise you do and the effect it has on you all depends on what you put into it.
If you are not capable of running a marathon, perhaps you should start jogging your block. Work to your own level of difficulty.

Breathing exercises are a holistic approach to health. There are some of the meat heads that you see at the gym, that look like Donkey Kong, these guys do not know of holistic health.
Practicing your breathing while you run or weight lift is going to improve the workout by controlling your heart rate. The function of the heart is to pump blood throughout the body and the function of the lungs is to provide blood with oxygen; these two organs go hand in hand (or heart and lung, if you will).
By practicing control over your breathing you are also going to be dictating control over your heart. This can help to vastly improve your cardio strength.
When you are jogging or running breath in through your nose and out through your mouth. Inhaling through the nose is going to slow the intake of oxygen, causing your lungs to work more effectively.
And exhaling through the mouth is going to press all the old stale oxygen out of your lungs. So both have their purpose, and that is why the breathing routine is generally the same for every exercise.
Practicing proper breathing is going to greatly improve whatever athletic sport or activity you are involved in. Keep your heart and lungs healthy, and breath.
