Jiu Jitsu is a form of Japanese martial arts. There are a number of classical schools, so you can find Jiu Jitsu classes in a variety of forms. However, if you've never attended a class of any style before, there are some commonalities you should know that will help make your introduction to this ancient martial art smooth.
You should first have a basic idea of what to expect from Jiu Jitsu classes. This martial art is considered a grappling sport, which means there will be physical contact with other students. As a discipline of unarmed combat, it involves kicking, punching, throwing, and restraining opponents. So if you aren't prepared to literally get physical with your classmates, a more solitary style of martial art might be better for you.
As a beginner, you won't be expected to have the traditional uniform (also called a gi). Instead, you should feel comfortable wearing shorts and a t-shirt. You don't want to wear anything with pockets or that's too baggy, as fingers and toes can get caught on them and twisted. If you have a uniform from another martial art style, it might be acceptable to your instructor.
In addition to wearing the right clothing, you might also want to wear some protective pads as a beginner. A mouth guard is quite common and you should bring your own if you want to wear one. The same goes for a protective cup. However, knee, ear, and elbow pads might be available to borrow from the studio.
Different schools have different rules on what to wear on your feet, if anything at all. Some studios will require that you practice barefoot. Other studios will permit some types of shoes, but you'll want to confirm which types. For example, wrestling shoes are often not allowed.
Since there is a lot of close contact with other students, good manners dictate that you come to class clean. Good hygiene is always appreciated. This includes keeping your finger and toe nails short so you don't inadvertently scrape your classmates.
The last important note to keep in mind about your personal appearance is to remove anything on your person that can fly around or get grabbed. This means most kinds of jewelry, except perhaps very small stud earrings. If you have long hair, you should put it up in a short ponytail or bun.
When you arrive for your first class, it's a good idea to show up early. First, this will give you a chance to introduce yourself to the instructor. The instructor will probably ask you a bit about your background either with Jiu Jitsu or other related types of activities, just to gauge your physical abilities as a beginner.
You also want to come early to make sure you have time to take care of other basics. If you haven't already come in to the studio earlier to sign up for the Jiu Jitsu classes, which usually includes having to sign a waiver, you'll have to do this before the class starts.
