Rice is probably one of the most commonly used grain in the world, right up there with wheat and corn. Rice is used as a main staple in diets in the Eastern world.
In America, many people are choosing rice in more dishes, not only because it tastes good, but also because it tends to be one the hypoallergenic foods. More and more people are developing gluten sensitivities to wheat and having to use rice as a main addition into their diet.
There are many kinds of rice; white rice, basmati, short-grain, medium-grain, and long-grain. These are all great choices among many more types of rice.
But, basically, in America, if you go to a restaurant or fast food joint, you will find that white rice is the predominant choice. It's the same in the grocery stores, white rice is the most popular choice for meals and menu planning.
Now, if you go into a health food store, you will hardly ever see white rice. But, most groceries stores are starting to carry brown rice for their more health conscious customers.
Why is brown rice becoming popular for the health conscious? Because, it has the bran, the germ, and an abundance of vitamins and minerals, where the white rice has been stripped of the rich abundance.
Many people choose it for its high fiber content. In fact, if you are not used to eating foods high in fiber, it could give you a real clean out or case of diarrhea.
The fiber content makes it a great choice for people with diabetes who want to keep their insulin control at reasonable levels. Studies have shown that brown rice contributes to less risk for getting diabetes in the first place and for helping diabetics to fare better.
While white rice, on the other hand, can cause a person to be more apt to get diabetes. White rice does taste better and is much more popular than the brown rice.
Rice, in general, does not have any gluten like the typical bread grains, so people who are gluten sensitive really rely on it for better health and sustenance.
Many people are trying to lose weight these days, and fiber has been found to be a great tool in their efforts. The fiber in whole grains, beans, fruits, and vegetables really helps to carry out the fat.
Fiber also has zero calories and can really fill you up on less chance to gain weight. So, brown rice is becoming quite popular with those who are educated on the way it contributes to weight loss and energy.
It's also low in fat compared to the high-protein fad diets of the day, where people focus on getting protein from animal sources and compromise their health unknowingly. Animal products tend to be high in fat and pathogens and low in fiber so they contribute to colon cancer, kidney disease and kidney stones, and heart disease.
Choosing to eat more whole grains such as brown rice, along with some beans is a high-protein, no-fat, high-fiber choice for better health and a trimmer body. Make more of your meals with brown rice and watch your health improve and the fat melt away. Destry Masterson is a health and nutrition expert.
