When you were a child you would sleep for a good fifteen to sixteen hours a day that is because you were at the zenith of your developing life. Sleep provides the body with the moments where it can repair and rejuvenate itself, this is drastically important for athletes, students and anyone who just wants to maintain physical fitness or mental stability.
Without sleep first your brain would start to deteriorate- literally. The brain is a very sensitive organ composed predominately of fats and water, inside there are tons of neurons that make up networks for electric pulses to travel on.
These pulses are thoughts, senses, and feelings. Every time an electro-chemical pulse passes through a network of neurons it weakens that network a little bit, similar to when you exercise a muscle you are actually tearing apart the muscle fiber.
In both cases you need sleep. This is when the body can turn off all the complex mechanisms that are putting the body to work and can start actually repairing itself.
You don't imagine people would want to repair the electric wiring in your house while all the lights are turned on. It is the same with the body, during sleep the brain actually shuts down different sections throughout the night.
This keeps you alive, by not turning everything off at once, and also allows for development. So sleep is an imperative necessity and arguably the most important part of the day, so it is vitally important that everyone get their eight hours.
Unconsciousness is a battle for many people, some will toss and turn without being able to find comfortable position and others will ceaselessly try to quail their restless minds. This is where sleep aids come in.
"Sleep is important and if you can't get it then get some help", that is the basic concept behind these sleep aids. The problem is any time you take any external substance your body starts creating a dependency.
Melatonin is a chemical that is created in the brain. Any time the lights are off your brain is going to recognize that as a sign to start pumping the chemical sleep inducer into your blood.
Taking melatonin supplements will help with sleep, but you also run the risk of barring yourself to natural acquiring sleep. It is undoubtedly the healthiest to get sleep naturally, some ways to help with this would be to exercise throughout the day both your mind and body.
Also try to clear your mind of everything in the night and completely relax. If you can forget about everything in your life you will find sleep coming very easily.
