As we near the coming 2012 election everyone has one question on their mind: why the heck do Mormons not drink coffee? Recently Mitt Romney's character has been drawn into question on account of his radical beliefs that not only deter him from drinking alcohol but coffee too.
Here are the facts: coffee is sort of bad for your health. Now it is hard to say who is right and who is wrong when speaking of matters that extend beyond the realm of the physical body, but with coffee it is a scientific matter.
Caffeine, believe it or not, is not actually good for you. There are temporary benefits that could be considered "good", but coffee doesn't actually feed your body with nutrition.
The caffeine only sends a burst of activity in the brain, this will result in a temporarily improved memory, perhaps a bit of talking, and maybe the jitters. Apart from those temporary side effects coffee doesn't do anything good.
So the skeptics will say, "How bad can it really be?" It isn't a question of how terribly wrong it is, but how is the best way you could treat your body.
You see what just happened there, took your standards raised them up a notch, and now you know and now you can never go back to the way you thought before. It is comparable to a cigarette, they both cause temporary satisfaction but they also cause long term detriment.
Sure, a cigarette is obviously like two times worse than a cup of coffee, but again, that doesn't mean that coffee isn't bad. What happens is the caffeine in the coffee creates a dependency in your brain.
That probably sounds a little scary, because it is a little scary. When caffeine temporarily stimulates the brain to react quicker, at the same time when you come down off the caffeine buzz you are going to be a little slower.
Don't worry, even if you fry a few neurons in your brain you have a billion of them, so relearning things is going to be easy. But it is best to never fry any of your brain cells to begin with, and maybe that is why the Mormons don't mess with coffee.
However, if you are reading this and you are already completely addicted to coffee, you will be ok. Many people live nearly completely happy lives whilst being entirely and utterly hooked to drinking coffee.
So stop drinking coffee because it is good for your body to not do that, and probably it is a little better for your soul. You won't know until you dare to live above the influence of coffee.
