It's always fun to try something new if you know that it has a reputation for being good tasting. Everyone knows what a regular navel orange is like, but not many people have tried a caracara orange.
Caracara oranges are a mutation from a regular navel orange. They have a different color inside. They are not scary like the blood oranges that are very red.
Caracara oranges have a grapefruit-like look inside, much like a ruby grapefruit. They are not orange looking, but rather pinkish to reddish.
The taste is awesome. They taste very sweet like a tangerine, but thry have just a little twist with a taste of something slightly different, almost like a cherry.
They are very juicy and have sections like a regular orange. There are no stones or seeds so you can't plant a tree from the seed of one and you don't have to worry about spitting them out.
The trees are made with special graftings that result in this fun type of orange. This fruit is great used in salads and recipes where you just want to have a little color that is more on the red side than the orange side.
Their unique taste is easy to get used to and one that kids will love, as well as adults. They are also packed with nutrition.
There is plenty of vitamin A and C, folate, potassium, and even lycopene. These are one of the perfect fruits to have in the middle of winter when your resistance becomes low, and you need a boost for your immune system.
Similar to the regular oranges, they bring you a bit of sunshine during the coldest time of the year. You can juice them for breakfast and it's like drinking some nutritional sunshine.
The next time you are at the produce section of your favorite grocery store, look and see if there are any available. Buy a few to start, just to try them out and see how you like them.
If your grocer doesn't carry them, you can make a special request for him/her to order some for you. You won't be disappointed.
You can eat them plain, cut the peel off, and cut up some pieces for your favorite salad. People won't know what it is and will be pleasantly surprised to see that they look like a grapefruit piece, but taste almost like a tangerine.
Cut them in half and juice them with a hand held or electric juicer. You will have the most nutritional sweet juice that is better for you than a soda and just as good.
Keep yourself well this winter by enjoying the fruits and vegetables of the season. They are specially grown by nature to be the perfect solution to your unique needs of immune boosting foods during a somewhat difficult time. Destry Masterson is a health and nutrition expert.
