The most important word when trying to lose weight is "why". Everything starts with "why" and "why" will usually determine success or failure. Until I get to the bottom of why my Glasgow personal training clients are trying to lose weight it can be hard to motivate them. Once I know the thing that will drive them to succeed it is easy to keep coming back to it and keep my clients working hard. If you don't really care about your reason for losing weight then it is unlikely to motivate you to keep working when times get tough.
A classic motivation to lose weight is to look great for an event like a wedding, a beach holiday or Christmas party season. If photographs are likely then that is enough for a lot of people to start eating healthy and training properly. Photos after all, last forever! Some people find goal orientated reasons for losing weight like wanting to run a 10k for charity. They realise that to help the charity they will have to lose weight to complete the challenge and end up losing weight as a by product of the goal they set themselves.
Meeting someone that you really like, but lacking the confidence to do anything about it because you don't like the way you look also serves as a powerful motivation to get your self in shape. Making a few simple changes to your life so you drop 30lbs is a small price to pay for love. Sometimes what you need to light a fire under you is a chip on your shoulder and this often comes from being made fun of by some idiot because of your weight. Always remember you can lose weight but they will always be an idiot, so lose the weight and show them how strong you are.
Having a doctor tell you that you have to lose weight because you are heading for a ton of medical problems can be a huge motivating factor to lose weight. Especially when you realise that you might miss out on seeing your kids grow up and have kids of their own just because you were too lazy for diet and exercise. Being able to walk into any clothes shop and know that you will be able to fit into anything you want is a massive motivation for women. People often focus on what they have to give up to lose weight without considering what they get in return. It is only when you reach your goals that you realise how totally worth the effort it is. Iain Smith (MPhil/CSCS) owns Standout Gym, an independent warehouse gym in Glasgow, focusing on weight loss. He offers small group training as an affordable alternative to Glasgow personal training.
