When people hear the word locomotion generally they think of trains probably with steam engines. That is a cool image to have for such a word, but, in fact, locomotion means the act or power to move from place to place.
So it doesn't exclusively pertain to locomotives as many people commonly believe. Usually though when people talk about exercise they just use the word motion or movement.
These are great, and essentially they are the same thing. The difference is in the definition.
Locomotion maintains the act or power to move, act and power being the key words. Motion is basically just the movement part without any reference to power or actions.
It is imperative that you understand that actions and power are both required especially when you have a fitness agenda you are looking to fulfill. Accomplishing goals is nothing like walking to get the mail.
Receiving the mail requires only movement it doesn't take any locomotion. Losing weight and maintaining a healthy physique is going to require locomotion, which comprises both movement and power.
Think of it this way, movement will get you from point A to point B in the small window of time that pertains to a single day. Locomotion is going to get you from point A to point B over a longer period of time, it could be months, it could be years, or it could be your entire lifetime.
Fitness and health require something more than movement and that is consistency. To maintain consistency you are going to have to demonstrate some powerful action.
Be like the little locomotive that could, repeat phrases like, "I think I can, I think I can". It may surprise you, but these mantras and personal little incantations actually do help.
Find an exercise that you enjoy, that you can work with, and that you can invest your time into and be happy about. When you are working on fitness it has got to feel like something is being accomplished, if it feels like a chore then it most likely will not last very long.
Fitness is a way of life created by everyday decisions, thus meaning every day you put off your fitness you have ceased to live a healthy lifestyle. No one has ever gotten fit by putting off their diets till tomorrow or telling themselves that they will exercise later.
That is just not how little locomotives get up hills. Imagine if he would have said, "Oh I could do that, but I am going to wait till tomorrow."
