Do Dog Vitamins Really Work?

Read 36 times since Wednesday, January 18, 2012

For as long as natural health has existed, more mainstream medical professionals and private individuals have always questioned its effectiveness. This is true of health tools for humans, and it's just as true of supplements for dogs. Although the debate may always continue for some, the majority of dog owners consider the issue settled: dog vitamins are a benefit to their canine companions.

Why Dog Vitamins?

Canines, like humans, require certain nutrients in order to live and perform at their best. Like their human counterparts, dogs usually get this nutrition through their food. As they eat, everything they eat is digested and absorbed through the stomach and intestine. It is then digested, any nutrients extracted, and then passed out through the same system.

In theory, this should provide everything that is necessary for health. In practice, however, the nutrients extracted purely through digestion are rarely if ever sufficient for wellness. There are many things that can go wrong in the process. First, finding a human or canine who eats a full balanced and totally nutritious diet is very rare. The total nutrition value is only rarely present in food nowadays, which means it's not possible to achieve full nutritional balance with food alone. On top of that, it's rare for food to be optimally digested and absorbed. If food isn't chewed properly, or the digestive juices etc in the stomach aren't properly distributed, a lot of nutritional value can be wasted. When the full nutrition of less than nutritious food isn't properly extracted, canines can quickly lose optimal health because they just don't get the nourishment they need.

Supplements For Dogs Fill The Gap

When regular food isn't enough, supplements for dogs take over and provide the missing values. Dog vitamins are easier to digest and absorb than food, especially if taken separately from large meals. In addition, they can provide a much more concentrated and targeted dose of the desired vitamin or mineral than most foods ever could. This allows owners to ensure that their pets receive the required values without adding excess calories from excess food.

Many of the illnesses and ailments that impact pets come from a lack of proper nutrition. Deficiencies may show up in extreme cases with short term symptoms like scurvy in humans, but it's much more common for them to show up in longer term, slower impact manifestations. Research is still coming in, but there appears to be lots of potential for supplements for dogs to have broad reaching impact on a lot of different ailments. This makes sense, as improved nutrition leads to improved physical health, which in turn strengthens the body to fight off any kind of problems.

New trials are pointing to the benefits from dog vitamins every day. It is becoming increasingly apparent that canines, like their human counterparts, benefit from the added supplementation.
