Despite your detest for every single government program, you really ought to give these guys a little credit. Obviously it should be legal to buy and sell whatever you want, but if you are going to sell things with foreign chemicals and unwarranted ingredients you had better do it from a privatized institution.
The fact of the matter is, when someone goes into the grocery store they expect to find food that is safe to eat. The grocery store doesn't want to be held accountable for every one that winds up with salmonella, so the FSIS was created to inspect the food and determine whether it is safe or not to eat.
Great news right, now you can go into any grocery store in America and trust that the food there is not going to give you any fatal disease. However, regulations are a bit muddled so now if you want to sell anything you have to get it inspected, even if the buyer is fully aware that the viscous chemical ingredients are carcinogenic.
Even though there is a strong possibility you will get cancer from what you want to buy, you will not be able to be the FSIS hasn't checked it off as marketable. It is interesting to note that Tabaco is legal.
Tabaco companies have some special deals with government allowing them to produce as much nicotine as they want, so long as they do not advertise to kids. Though, by simply making them illegal to minors the appeal is increased dramatically.
There are a whole bunch of different carcinogenic additives, preservatives, thickeners, sweeteners, all those that are added to foods, but as long as they are labeled they are all right. If you check out the FSIS home page online, you will see that they mainly just recall products for semantic errors, like not listing the use of soy beans in their broth.
For example, December on the 30 in Phoenix AZ, 7,500 pounds of marinated beef was recalled because they didn't record ingredients wheat and milk. This was classified as a high risk recall because some people are very allergic to wheat or milk.
A wheat allergy can be very disruptive to daily life and cause severe adverse reactions. Lactose intolerance on the other hand is just going to be disruptive and in most cases probably considered rude.
So thanks to the FSIS you do not have to deal with eating that marinated beef that could have quite possibly given you cramps and gas. Destry Masterson is a health and nutrition expert. She publishes articles for http://www.foodinsurance.com and recommends them for food storage.
