Most of us realize what we have to do in order to lose weight. We have to eat less and exercise more. That's almost a given. Take in more than you burn and you will gain weight. Burn more than you take in and you'll lose weight. Simple... right? In reality, not as simple as it sounds. Just how many calories do you burn? Just doing nothing can burn off those calories. Walking around your house or at work, perhaps climbing a few steps, doing the laundry -- this all burns calories. If you don't go overboard on fast food or fatty snacks then you may come out even.
A proper and consistently thought out diet (and I don't mean a routine, I mean what you eat and drink), is the best method for losing weight, along with additional exercise. A non-diet soft drink can contain 250 calories and a piece of cake can contain 300. Liquid calories are the worst as your brain does not switch off the hunger center when you drink -- it needs the trigger of solid food in your stomach. Moderation is key and you can still keep most of your favorite foods in your daily diet, just in a smaller quantity or weight.
Study and be very clever about food substitutions. Sometimes a piece of chocolate just has to be a piece of chocolate. And a small amount of fat may satisfy cravings in that area. Human beings love fat -- and that may have come from our cavemen and women ancestors. Healthy snacks on hand and ready to eat are the key. Tuna is good, as is veggies and dip. Have the vegetables cut up and ready to eat in the refrigerator. I call that the banana syndrome. If you can peel it easily or eat it as it is, then you will. If not ready to eat, then we may not. Plot out your snacks on a weekend day, then line them up for the week ahead. A planned diet is healthier than an unplanned one.
Binge eating is the worst weight gain trigger. If you can write down a few positive weight loss goals, then you will achieve them easier. Something like: "I want to lose twenty pounds so I can be the size I was in high school" -- would be motivation for a school reunion. Above all, remember to be healthy and happy.
