Risks Associated With Liposuction

Read 65 times since Monday, June 29, 2009

Liposuction is a type of cosmetic surgery that removes excess and unwanted fat deposits from various areas of the body. The process can also be used for body contouring and giving the body a better shape. Since this surgery involves the removal of excess fat deposits between the skin and the muscles, it also helps in toning the muscles of the body. The removal of excess fats makes a person look more young and attractive. Liposuction can be used for the removal of fats from areas like abdomen, face, chin, neck, back, thighs, arms, hips, knees, calves and ankles.

Liposuction is carried out by using a device called cannula with which there is attached a suction pump. The device is made to enter the body parts by making small incisions and targeting the fat cells. These fats are then suctioned out of the body by the suction pump. Since liposuction is a surgical procedure, it is not free from risks. There are several risks associated with this process.

One of the main risks associated with liposuction is the affect of anesthesia during the surgery. The use of general anesthesia is not considered as safe during the surgery mainly because it impairs the breathing and may cause a blockage in the air passage and may even lead to a cardiac arrest. Infections might happen after the surgery. If the incisions made during the surgery are not stitched properly or they are left unclean, a patient might get prone to many infections. Another risk associated with the process of liposuction is swelling on the body area that has been treated. This swelling may persist for several months causing discomfort to the patient.

Another risk that a patient might have to face after liposuction is change in sensation because of nerve compression. During the surgery, nerves might get affected and get compressed. This might lead to a patient either experiencing pain in the area treated or the patient may suffer from numbness in the area treated and not feel anything at all. Burns may be caused when the ultrasound assisted liposuction technique is used.

The skin over the area treated might get deformed or discolored. The skin may even die. The skin may then fall off leading to what is termed skin necrosis. During tumescent liposuction, fluid is injected into the body of the patient. An excessive amount of this fluid may lead to fluid imbalance in the body. Fluid imbalance may also occur when a surgeon removes excess fats from the body. Fluid may also get accumulated in the body leading to a condition called hematoma. The surgery may even damage some internal organs or tissues. Traditional liposuction may even lead to cardiac arrests and death of a patient.

To ensure that a patient does not suffer from any of the above risks, the surgeon performing the liposuction must be chosen wisely. It must be ensured that the surgeon is both experienced and an expert at the process. Also the patient must take care that he is in good health for the surgery to be successful.
