Bontril diet pills belong to a class of weight loss drugs called appetite suppressants. Bontril diet pills are usually sold as white tablets or as capsules. The capsule form of Bontril has an extended release action resisting rapid dissolution in the stomach while releasing the drug into the bloodstream over a sustained time period.

Bontril Diet Pills

Bontril diet pills work similar to amphetamines, acting upon the brain to stimulate the nervous system. This sort of appetite suppression results from a combination of its physiological action and other effects on the body's metabolism. Because of its ability to surpress general appetite, Bontril can also be called an "anorexiant."

Bontril may be prescibed by a physician if a patient has failed to make progress on a conventional diet and exercise program, and the cause of obesity has been determined to be related to eating behavior with no underlying hormonal, psychological or metabolic abnormality.

How Bontril is prescribed:

Bontril diet pills are usualyy prescribed in 35 mg increments to be taken over 12 hours. The maximum permissible dose is usually 65 mg to be taken three times a day. The drug should be taken 90mins prior to a meal. The use of Bontril diet pills should be re-evaluated at the end of a month period. If the patient has lost less than 2 kg then Bontril pills may not be the ideal treatment  for this particualt patient.

The drug is not to be used long term. as the body develops tolerance to its appetite suppressing effects and would fail to respond even to increased doses.

Bontril Contraindications:
  • People with known allergic reactions to this class of drugs
  • People suffering from advanced arteriosclerosis, heart disease, moderate to severe hypertension, thyroid abnormalities & glaucoma
  • People with a past history of drug dependence
  • People under 12 years of age.

The patients body develops tolerance to Bontril diet pills within a few weeks. In this case the recommended dosage should not be increased in an attempt to increase weight loss. Instead Bontril use needs to be ended. Increasing the dose at this point will only side effects.

Abrupt stoppage of Bontril use following high-dosage use results in extreme fatigue and mental depression. Sleep changes have also been noted. It is recommended therefore, that the dosage be slowly ended over some time.
